The program in February
Rock and roots music, specifically bone-dry Southern rock and blues with a touch of alternative country, is on offer at the Darmstadt Americana series in February. The program features Elisabeth Lee and Martin Hauke. They will primarily play their own songs as well as a few numbers by artists such as Lucinda Williams, Etta James, Tom Petty, Tyler Childers, and Johnny Cash.
Elizabeth Lee's voice is as dusty and groovy as the hot Texas desert. She was honored with the prestigious Austin Music Award for Best Female Vocals at the South by Southwest Music Festival. Born in Pasadena, Texas, she has shared stages worldwide with artists such as Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Patti Smith. One day, an unassuming blond man came and sat down next to her on stage. He took her hand and said with a warm smile, "Hey... Keep on rockin'." It was Tom Petty, whose advice she still cherishes to this day.
The collaboration with the highly acclaimed musician Martin Hauke, the longtime guitarist of Europe's best Rolling Stones tribute band Voodoo Lounge, proves to be the meeting that was bound to happen. His guitar style is so raw and uncompromising that most people would assume he hails from Texas rather than the North German Plain. These two musicians from different continents complement each other perfectly and have undoubtedly found their "dream" band.
In September 2017, Elizabeth Lee and Martin Hauke released their first CD, "BLUE SKY." "ROAD to RILEY's," the follow-up, was released in 2019 at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Their third full-length album, "FOR REAL: 7V-Sessions," was recorded during lockdown and released in September 2021. "These two represent captivating roots rock with plenty of groove and a true Texas feel. I'm delighted that these two fantastic artists are enriching our series," says Americana curator Thomas Waldherr.
