Two piano recitals at the Literaturhaus are dedicated to Chopin and the musical genre of the ballad
The Chopin Society is hosting a two-day ballad festival at the Darmstadt Literature House on October 10th and 11th, 2026. Professional pianists from the Society will perform works by Fryderyk Chopin and other composers who have explored the musical form of the ballad. Both concerts begin at 6 pm.
The focus is on a genre that Chopin adapted for the piano in the 19th century. For centuries, ballads had recounted dramatic, mysterious, or tragic events in verse and song. Chopin adopted this narrative principle but dispensed with words, creating four ballads for piano.
From Chopin to Debussy
With his compositions, Chopin established a new form of the instrumental ballad. Other composers later adopted the idea. The classical concert repertoire includes ballads by Franz Liszt, Edvard Grieg, Johannes Brahms, and Claude Debussy, among others.
The Darmstadt Festival will present this development over two evenings. Following an introduction by Thomas Nickelsen, pianists from the Chopin Society will perform works by nearly a dozen composers.
Some pieces, with titles or additions like "Homage to Chopin," "Edward," or "El Amor y la Muerte," hint at possible thematic connections. Others are simply labeled "Ballade," leaving the interpretation of the music to the audience.
Tickets cost 20 euros
The ballad festival will take place on Saturday, October 10th, and Sunday, October 11th, at 6 pm each day at the Literaturhaus Darmstadt, Kasinostraße 3.
Tickets cost €20 ; discounted prices apply for members of the Chopin Society and students. Tickets can be purchased by calling +49 6155 79 52 606 , by emailing buero@chopin-gesellschaft.de , or at the box office on the evening of the performance
