The "Organic from our region" campaign brings regional organic food to community catering and the city center cafeteria
As part of the "Organic from Our Region" campaign, dishes made with regional organic food will be on the menu in Darmstadt on Wednesday, September 23. Participating venues include daycare centers, schools, and the student union's cafeteria in the city center. A company canteen is also taking part.
Darmstadt is thus participating in the nationwide initiative "Bio Komm' mit" (Organic Come Along) of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Community. This initiative aims to support municipalities in increasing the proportion of organically produced food in production and consumption.
Around 400 meals with regional organic ingredients
The student union is offering a special dish featuring chickpeas in the city center cafeteria. According to the city, the Darmstadt-based company Biond, which supplies various schools as well as the Dassault Systèmes company canteen, is preparing around 400 meals using regional organic potatoes, eggs, and dairy products .
The municipal enterprise for tasks and services (EAD), which provides lunch to 24 schools and three daycare centers, is also participating with a special dish made from regional organic food.
Mayor Barbara Akdeniz visited the daycare center by the city wall as part of the initiative and participated in the communal lunch. The city has set guidelines for the proportion of organic, regional, seasonal, and fair-trade products in the meals served in its daycare centers, Akdeniz explained.
Expansion conceivable next year
Environmental officer Michael Kolmer sees this year's campaign as a first step. The featured dish will initially be offered on a pilot basis in company restaurants. According to him, there is interest in expanding the campaign next year.
The demonstration dishes are intended to practically show how regional, seasonal and organically produced food can be used in community catering.
