Mentoring project connects students of h_da with primary school children
What could be more helpful in life than a good friend by your side? For some children in difficult circumstances, this isn't a given. In Weiterstadt, a joint project is now sending a strong message about social support and individual development .
In a collaboration between the Weiterstadt Youth Services , Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da) , the Astrid Lindgren School , and the Anna Freud School, "Balu and You" is being implemented this semester . Nine students from h_da are volunteering as " Balus ." They are supported by nine "Moglis "—five children from the Astrid Lindgren School and four children from the Anna Freud School.
Personal support outside of everyday school life
"Balu and You" is a nationally recognized mentoring program in which young adults mentor a schoolchild. The goal is to empower children individually , foster their social skills , and open up new experiences for them. The Balus meet their Moglis regularly outside of school, plan activities together, and support them in their personal development .
The project is supported by the Weiterstadt Youth Services , Prof. Dr. Schu as the responsible lecturer at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, and the principals of the two participating schools . This close collaboration ensures that both pedagogical expertise and school perspectives are incorporated into the project.
A win for children, students and the city
For the Weiterstadt Youth Services, the project is an important component of their preventative and social work in the community. "We are very pleased to establish this cooperation with Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and to offer both students and children a rewarding experience," the Youth Services emphasizes.
The involvement also offers added value for the students: They gain insights into educational fields of practice and actively engage with responsibility, relationship building and social engagement .
The participating schools expressly welcome the initiative. The mentoring program gives the children additional attention, personal support, and new perspectives . The nine Moglis are starting the project with great anticipation and will spend one afternoon per week with their Balus.
All involved are convinced that the coming months a valuable and enriching time both Balus and Mowglis .
