“La Costanza vince l'inganno” at the 77th Dotter concert on May 31, 2026
The Darmstadt Baroque Festival will open on Sunday, May 31, 2026, with Christoph Graupner's opera "La Costanza vince l'inganno". The concert will take place as part of the 77th Dotter Concert in the Ernst-Ludwig-Saal and begins at 6 p.m.
The opera was composed in 1715 and is considered a remarkable production of its time. In addition to a top-class ensemble of singers and the court orchestra, a French dance company was also integrated into the stage performance. Furthermore, the Landgrave himself contributed musical pieces.
The story is set in the pastoral world of Arcadia. It centers on Prince Meleagro of Tessalia and Princess Atalanta of Arcadia, who initially meet unrecognized and fall in love. Intrigues, particularly those orchestrated by the character Silvia, put their relationship to the test before the conflicts are finally resolved.
The performance brings a work by the Darmstadt court conductor Christoph Graupner back to the stage and places it in the context of the baroque operatic tradition.
