Anika Pages and Helmut Markwort bring the correspondence between Shaw and Campbell to the stage
The play "Beloved Liar," a classic of world literature, will be performed at the Tromm Court Theatre on September 12th and 13th, 2025. The passionate correspondence between Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw and celebrated actress Stella Campbell unfolds as an emotional duel full of wit, melancholy, and intensity.
For over four decades, Shaw and Campbell exchanged letters – about theater, love, jealousy, and self-deception. The focus is on Shaw's successful play "Pygmalion," which later achieved worldwide fame as the musical "My Fair Lady." The performance also addresses the bitter dispute over whether the private letters should be published.
The play features two strong personalities: actress Anika Pages, known from film, television, and theater, portrays Stella Campbell. Alongside her is Helmut Markwort, founder of the news magazine Focus and a passionate actor, in the role of George Bernard Shaw. Both bring their experience from theater and stage productions to their roles, lending the evening a special intensity.
“Beloved Liar” is more than an evening at the theater – it is a play about the power of language, about love in all its facets, and about the timeless longing for closeness and truth.
