Traditional specialty can be pre-ordered for November 17th
A Bickenbach tradition continues in 2026: The popular Dunkel (a type of dark stew) will once again be offered in a "Dunksel to go" version. Pre-ordered portions can be picked up on Tuesday, November 17th, between 6 and 8 pm at the Röderhof stand in front of the Bickenbach town hall.
Normally, the traditional "Dunksel" (a local dish) has been served at the community center on the first Thursday of November since 1977, accompanied by a theatrical performance. However, no suitable theatrical production could be found this year. Furthermore, the Röderhof venue does not have sufficient capacity on the original date. Therefore, the municipality is once again opting for the to-go option offered in previous years.
Minimum of 100 orders required
For the event to take place, at least 100 portions must be pre-ordered. Mayor Markus Hennemann is confident: In previous to-go events, significantly more than 120 portions were sold.
A portion costs nine euros and consists of boiled potatoes with the traditional dark gravy, as well as one blood sausage and one liver sausage.
The municipality of Bickenbach is accepting orders by phone at 06257 9330 or online until November 2nd. Payment for the ordered portions can then be made at the town hall between November 3rd and 6th.

From poor people's food to a Bickenbach tradition
The dish "Dunksel" has a long history in Bickenbach. Originally, the spicy onion and bacon sauce was a simple, poor man's dish. Former mayor Karl Schemel and Adam Blaum from the then "Bickenbach Ensemble" took up the recipe and added blood sausage and liver sausage.
After a trial run in 1976, the Dunkel became a permanent fixture of the Bickenbach events calendar in 1977. For many years, the program also included theatrical performances by the "Bickenbach Ensemble" and later by the Bickenbach Players' Association 1946.
