A tandem tour at the HLMD shows how one of the most important works of art is preserved
How can a work of art made of fat, felt, paper, chocolate, or even sausage be preserved? This question will be explored in a special tandem tour at the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from 6 to 7p.m.
Under the title “Art that changes. The ‘Beuys Block’ from a conservation perspective”, restorer Sigrid Pfandlbauer and the head of the collection of Modern and Contemporary Art, Dr. Katrin Thomschke, provide exciting insights into the preservation of the world-famous complex of works by Joseph Beuys.
During a tour through the seven rooms of the "Block Beuys," participants will learn about the particular challenges involved in conserving the different materials and the strategies the museum is using to preserve the artwork for future generations. Furthermore, completed and planned restoration and conservation measures will be presented.
The number of participants is limited to 15 people . The cost is €8, or €5, plus a €4 guided tour fee. Tickets are available online and at the museum ticket office.
