City urges caution – concentration of cyanobacteria has doubled
Recent water samples taken from the Prinz von Hessen quarry have revealed a significantly elevated concentration of cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae. According to the Darmstadt city administration, the measured levels have now reached the "increased vigilance" level set by the German Federal Environment Agency.
Blue-green algae have doubled since Friday
Favored by persistently high temperatures and intense sunshine, the blue-green algae bloom has doubled from Friday (June 27) to Monday (June 30). The city is therefore urging all visitors to exercise particular caution when at the popular natural bathing lake.
Current warning notices are posted at the DLRG station and on additional signs around the lake. The city asks that these warnings be taken seriously.
Health hazard from blue-green algae
Blue-green algae can be harmful to health. Swallowing contaminated water can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin irritation, inflammation of the mucous membranes, or even respiratory distress. Blue-green algae are recognizable by a greenish-cloudy color of the water or by streaks on the surface.
Parks and Green Spaces Director Michael Kolmer explains: “City employees will continue to closely monitor the water quality. Should the situation worsen, we will immediately publish further information. I urge all citizens to act responsibly.”
