Lower temperatures and rain reduce the risk of fire
The city of Groß-Gerau has lifted the ban on candles in its cemeteries with immediate effect. Candles with open flames may now be used there again. The reason for lifting the ban is the recent drop in temperatures and rainfall.
The ban was issued at the end of May 2026. High temperatures and a lack of rain had created an extremely high fire risk at that time. A smaller fire had already broken out in the cemetery on Klein-Gerauer Straße.
Soils are no longer so dried out
According to the cemetery administration, the ban is no longer necessary. Due to the lower temperatures and rain, the soil is no longer as dry as it was in late spring and during the summer.
The regulation applies to all five cemeteries in the city. These are located on Klein-Gerauer Straße and Waldstraße in Groß-Gerau, as well as in the districts of Dornheim, Wallerstädten and Berkach.
Despite the lifting of the ban on candles, the cemetery administration still requests that people refrain from using fire to kill weeds.
