SV 1946 invites you to a classical championship and freestyle chess tournament
SV 1946 Groß-Gerau is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and is hosting two chess tournaments to mark the occasion. In addition to the open club championship in classical chess, a freestyle chess championship will also be offered for the first time.
Classic and modern: Two tournament formats
While classical tournaments use the traditional starting position, Freestyle Chess – also known as Chess960 or Random Chess – uses randomly drawn piece setups before each game. This variant originated with former world chess champion Bobby Fischer and ensures varied games without prepared openings.
Dates and participation
The freestyle tournament starts on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 7 p.m. and ends on June 26. Five rounds will be played; registration is possible until shortly before the tournament begins.
The traditional club championship begins on April 17, 2026, also at 7 p.m. and runs until June 19. Registration is required by April 15.
The venue for both tournaments is the top floor of the old district court in Groß-Gerau.
Open offer for interested parties
In addition to tournaments, the club regularly hosts open chess evenings. These take place on Fridays from 7 pm. Separate training sessions are offered for children and teenagers on Saturdays from 1 pm.
