Lectures on King Wenceslaus, Büttelborn and historical duties
The event series "City Stories – Then and Now" continues on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Haus Raiss in Groß-Gerau. From 10 to 11 a.m., Lebrecht Viebahn Sr., Herta Merz, and Rolf Meyer will speak about various chapters of regional history.
This time, the focus is, among other things, on "King Wenceslaus, the bibliophile, and the town charter of Gerau." On the sidelines of a court assembly in Frankfurt, King Wenceslaus, at the request of Counts Eberhard V and Diether VIII of Katzenelnbogen, elevated the then village of Gerau to the status of a town on January 21, 1398.
With the granting of town privileges, Gerau also received the right to hold an annual free fair on May 3rd and a weekly market on Wednesdays. Lebrecht Viebahn Sr. and Herta Merz present interesting and entertaining facts from the history of Groß-Gerau.
Former Büttelborn district forester Rolf Meyer offers another glimpse into the past with his article "The Village of Büttelborn". Lebrecht Viebahn senior also examines the historical "manual labor and draft animal services".
The event will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Haus Raiss municipal senior citizens' day center, Frankfurter Straße 46 in Groß-Gerau. The lectures are free of charge. Registration is not required.
