New holding should be sustainable for medical care in Darmstadt - start for 2026
A sustainable hospital model is to be built in Darmstadt: the science city of Darmstadt and the Agaplesion GAG are currently working on the founding of a joint holding for the Darmstadt Clinic and the Agaplesion Elisabethenstift. The aim is to ensure and expand the medical care of the city and the region sustainably. At the center of the planning is a medical concept that combines the strengths of both houses and provides for restructuring at both locations.

Medical concept takes shape
The future holding company is to combine two powerful locations. The chairman of the supervisory board of the Darmstadt Clinic, André Schellenberg, emphasizes: "On the basis of a differentiated medical concept, a new hospital with two locations is created. However, considerable investments are necessary for this." Funding of the state of Hesse and the federal government are therefore essential.
Also Dr. Markus Horneber, CEO of the Agaplesion GAG, speaks of a model project: "The concept ranges from highly complex intensive care medicine to outpatient interventions. This creates a maximum supplier with attractive working conditions and perspectives for specialists."
Division of tasks between the locations
The concept provides for a clear division of tasks:
- Location Elisabethenstift : Focus on elective treatments, outpatient operations, geriatrics, orthopedics, eye and skin clinic as well as psychosomatics.
- Location Clinic Darmstadt : Internal medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology and inpatient visceral and trauma surgery. The central emergency room is significantly expanded.
Construction from 2027 - intensive care medicine in focus
The necessary structural measures should start in 2027 and continue until around 2031. The first steps are the expansion of the intensive care center with 63 beds on Grafenstrasse. The start of the merging of planned specialist areas is planned for 2028.
Clemens Maurer, spokesman for the management of the Darmstadt Clinic, emphasizes: "Spatial changes bring about challenges. It is important that the employees are involved at an early stage. We want to grow together as a team before something changes spatially."
Accompanying change process and new corporate culture
Michael Nowotny, Managing Director of the Elisabeth Stift, announces comprehensive change management: "We take possible fears very seriously. The aim is to structured and transparent to change." A specially founded cultural team is intended to develop a common corporate culture.
Security of care and new medical offers
According to Dr. Jörg Noetzel, medical managing director of the clinic, lies another advantage in the long-term securing of medical services: "We can comply with minimum quantities, establish new offers such as the neurological early rehab phase B. and ensure that they close to home in Darmstadt and South Hesse."
The foundation of the holding is planned on January 1, 2026 . Until then, there are still important gremical decisions. Both houses want to inform employees closely - including about office hours at both locations.
