New center for construction and infrastructure to be built by the end of 2026 – city focuses on sustainability
Groß-Gerau. The construction and maintenance depot for the district town of Groß-Gerau is taking shape: On the approximately 16,000 square meter site on Nordring – opposite the fire station – modern buildings and facilities for the municipal depot are being built and will be completed by the end of 2026. The town is investing around 12.9 million euros in this forward-looking project.
Site prepared – construction begins after remediation
Before the actual construction work could begin, the former green waste collection site required extensive preparation. Soil contaminants were identified, polluted material removed, and disposed of properly. Only after the compaction and backfilling of a stable subsoil could construction begin.
“The new construction and operations depot is a milestone for our city. Here we are creating modern working conditions, pooling expertise and setting a clear example for the future viability of our infrastructure with sustainable solutions,” said Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau.
Two construction phases until the end of 2026
The new building will be constructed in two phases:
- Phase 1:
Social and administrative buildings with changing rooms, showers, and offices for 55 employees will be constructed. Workshops for carpentry, painting, metalwork, masonry, and automotive work will also be built, along with storage areas and garages for garbage trucks, sweepers, and trucks. - Construction phase 2:
By the end of 2026, a bulk material storage facility, a washing area, additional storage and container areas, as well as the completion of the outdoor facilities with paved areas, green areas, rainwater infiltration and fencing will follow.
Sustainability and technology in focus
A combination of heat pump and gas boiler will be used for heating. The municipal utility company GGV will install photovoltaic systems on all roofs, and plans also include operating its own system on the bulk material storage facility. The administration building will also have a green roof.
A system of rainwater swales handles drainage, while wastewater is directed into the municipal sewer system. Two access roads will ensure optimal access to the site.
Award across Europe
The construction work is being tendered Europe-wide. Contracts have already been awarded for structural work, sewer and concrete work, as well as for heating, plumbing, ventilation, electrical work, and steel construction. Once completed, the construction and maintenance depot will play a central role in the city's infrastructure.
