New Center for Construction and Infrastructure to be built by the end of 2026 – City focuses on sustainability
Groß-Gerau. The construction and maintenance yard of the district town of Groß-Gerau is taking shape: On the approximately 16,000 square meter site on Nordring – opposite the fire department – modern buildings and facilities for the municipal depot will be built by the end of 2026. The city is investing approximately €12.9 million in this pioneering project.
Site prepared – construction begins after renovation
Before the actual construction work could begin, the former green waste collection site required extensive preparation. Soil contaminants were identified, contaminated material removed, and properly disposed of. Construction work could only begin after compaction and backfilling of a stable subgrade.
"The new construction and maintenance yard is a milestone for our city. We are creating modern working conditions, pooling expertise, and setting a clear example for the future viability of our infrastructure with sustainable solutions," said Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau.
Two construction phases until the end of 2026
The new building will be constructed in two phases:
- Construction Phase 1:
Social and administrative buildings with changing rooms, showers, and office space for 55 employees will be built. Workshops for carpentry, painting, metalworking, masonry, and automotive work will also be built, as well as storage areas and garages for garbage trucks, road sweepers, and trucks. - Construction Phase 2:
A bulk goods storage facility, a washing area, additional storage and container areas, as well as the completion of the outdoor facilities with paved areas, green spaces, rainwater infiltration, and fencing will follow by the end of 2026.
Focus on sustainability and technology
A combination of heat pump and gas boiler will be used for heating. The municipal utility company GGV is installing photovoltaic systems on all roofs, and a self-operated system is also planned for the bulk material storage facility. The administration building will also have a green roof.
A system of rainwater troughs will provide drainage, while wastewater will be channeled into the municipal sewer system. Two access roads will ensure optimal access to the site in the future.
Procurement across Europe
The construction work will be advertised across Europe. Contracts have already been awarded for the shell, sewer, and concrete work, as well as for the heating, plumbing, ventilation, electrical, and steel construction trades. Once completed, the construction and maintenance yard will play a central role in the city's infrastructure.
