Silent commemoration of the 175th birthday on August 14th at the Old Cemetery
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, will commemorate the 175th birthday of former mayor Adolf MornewegA floral tribute will be observed at his grave in the Old Cemetery, with a wreath being placed there during a silent memorial service.
Adolf Morneweg was born on August 14, 1851, in Groß-Bieberau. The lawyer became mayor of Darmstadt in 1891 and served as lord mayor from 1892 to 1909. His term in office coincided with a period in which Darmstadt developed into a modern metropolis.
Under Morneweg's leadership, the water, gas, and electricity supply was expanded, the sewage system was enlarged, and the electric tramway was introduced. At the same time, numerous public buildings were constructed. These included schools, buildings for the Darmstadt University of Technology, and the Hessian State Museum. The construction of the municipal indoor swimming pool, the present-day Art Nouveau bathhouse, was also planned and begun during his term.
Impulses for Darmstadt as a business location
Morneweg also championed the city's economic development. He supported the establishment of the Röhm company and the relocation of the Merck company to the northern part of Darmstadt. In doing so, he contributed to Darmstadt's long-term development as a business location.
The former mayor's presence is still felt in the cityscape today. Among other things, Morneweg Street, the Morneweg School, and the Morneweg Quarter commemorate him . His former residence on Klappacher Street, now a listed building, also remains.
