On September 6th, everything on Darmstadt's market square will revolve around bicycles, road safety and sustainable mobility
Bicycle flea market, bicycle coding, bicycle checks, and numerous hands-on activities: The science city of Darmstadt invites everyone to its 15th annual Bicycle Action Day on the market square on Sunday, September 6, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the first time, the event will be combined with a children's mobility day, making it particularly appealing to families and young road users.
Exhibitors, bicycle dealers, and clubs will present their products and invite visitors to try them out and participate. At the free bicycle flea market, private individuals can offer used bicycles, spare parts, and accessories. No prior registration is required.
Obstacle course and mobility quiz for children
At the newly integrated Children's Mobility Day, children can playfully gain experience with safe mobility. Activities include a mobility quiz and an obstacle course. Using bicycles, ride-on cars, and scooters, young visitors can practice safe road behavior.
"This year's Bicycle Action Day once again sends a clear message in support of environmentally friendly and healthy mobility. The bicycle is an indispensable component of our transport policy and makes an important contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions," explains Mobility Officer Paul Georg Wandrey.
He was particularly pleased about the expansion of the event: "I am especially pleased that we are combining the action day with the children's mobility day for the first time, and can thus playfully introduce safe and sustainable mobility to the youngest residents of Darmstadt."
Bicycle coding, check and washing facility
There are also numerous services available for adult cyclists. The program includes a bicycle check and bicycle registration. The bicycle wash station is also back again. For five euros, your bike will be cleaned there in just a few minutes. Since the station is typically very popular, the city recommends arriving early.
Other offerings include “Pimp your Bike”, test rides with the bicycle rickshaws from “Cycling without Age”, and mini-workshops from the workshop.
The German Bicycle Museum is bringing historic bicycles and children's vehicles to Darmstadt. Visitors can also try out various skill-based and fun bikes. With the "painting bike," rotating a wheel creates individual pictures that can be taken home.
"Thilda's Ice Cream Bike" provides refreshments. A free drinking water fountain is also available.
City cycling winners will be honored
As part of the cycling campaign, the most successful participants in this year's City Cycling Challenge will also be honored. The awards ceremony for the "City Cycling Challenge 2026" will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the market square. Climate Protection Officer Michael Kolmer will present the awards to the most successful individual participants and teams.
The cycling event, which also includes a children's mobility day, is being organized by the City of Darmstadt. Information about the program and any last-minute changes will be published online by the city.
