Board games, tournaments and 1,000 games to try out at the darmstadtium
Darmstadt. On November 22nd and 23rd, 2025, darmstadtium transform into a paradise for board game fans: For the 30th time "Darmstadt spielt" festival invites 6,000 visitors last year – and the Darmstadt Games Circle, together with the BDKJ Darmstadt and the darmstadtium another great turnout in 2025.
The games festival opens at 1 p.m. on Saturday at 11 a.m. on Sunday . Over 1,000 board games for free loan – from classics to the latest releases. Experienced helpers, the so-called "explainer bears ," will introduce the rules of the games.
Tournaments, workshops and anniversary events
In addition to popular tournaments for Carcassonne , Tichu , Catan and Mixed Forest, this year there will also be a Bring & Buy flea market as well as workshops for educators, teachers and game fans who are interested in play-based educational topics .
A highlight of the anniversary year is the "Catan-Connect" on Saturday evening (November 22, 8:15 p.m.), where up to 78 players can compete against each other simultaneously , the "Schmidt Puzzle Championship" will take place for the first time in Darmstadt on Sunday, November 23 – here, teams compete to solve 60 puzzles as quickly as possible
Even fans of building blocks will get their money's worth: The South Hessian club "Born2Brick" is once again participating with a large exhibition area and interactive stations.
Community and commitment
“We want to get people excited about board games. Where better to do that than at a fair like ‘Darmstadt spielt’ (Darmstadt Plays), where visitors can try out new things together in a relaxed atmosphere,” says Michael Blumöhr , Chairman of the Darmstadt Games Association.
Michael Lindner from the BDKJ Darmstadt ( adds: “The diverse offerings make ‘Darmstadt spielt’ a special event for children, teenagers, and adults.”
The festival is organized by over 200 volunteers – without them the event would not be possible.
Future of the Games Center
In addition to the festival, the Darmstadt Games Club (Spielekreis Darmstadt e.V.) currently looking for new premises for its toy library and game meetups . The current lease for the games center at Rheinstraße 28 expires in 2026. They are looking for a space of at least 150 square meters , ideally accessible, centrally located, and affordable .
