Modern childcare facility offers space for 123 children
The town of Griesheim officially opened the new "Sophie-Scholl-Straße" daycare center in the southwest residential area on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The facility has been operating since mid-August and currently cares for 20 children in its nursery and kindergarten sections.
At the opening ceremony, Mayor Geza Krebs-Wetzl emphasized the importance of the new building for urban development: "With the new location, the childcare services in Griesheim will be expanded once again – an important step for family-friendliness and early childhood education in Griesheim."
Space for seven groups
The two-story, barrier-free facility offers space for a total of 123 children in seven groups – four nursery groups for 48 children on the ground floor and three groups for children over three years old for 75 children on the upper floor. A spacious outdoor area complements the modern facilities.
The building was constructed as a sustainable timber building using modular construction methods and, with its photovoltaic system, air-to-water heat pump and heat recovery, meets the energy standard of a passive house.
Construction costs significantly reduced
The construction costs amount to 4.9 million euros. The project was originally budgeted at around eight million euros. The savings were made possible by the approval of a functional service contract, i.e., a "one-stop shop" implementation, which was successfully negotiated with the state of Hesse at the city's initiative.
Delays due to water damage
After the groundbreaking ceremony in January 2024, construction initially proceeded according to plan. However, at the end of 2024, a technical defect caused water damage. The necessary repairs delayed the opening by several months. The first children were finally able to move in in mid-August 2025.
