Residents' registration office offers new photo service – recommendation for toddlers remains photo studio
Since May 1, 2025, only digital passport photos may be used for applying for identity cards and passports. This new regulation, which applies nationwide, is intended to increase security and simplify the identification process. The Griesheim city administration is therefore now offering a photo service directly at the town hall.
At the residents' registration office, digital photos can be easily taken at a kiosk. The cost is €6, and the process is intuitive, guided by on-screen instructions. After selecting the photo, a digital signature is captured, a password is assigned, and the image is securely transmitted to the processing department in compliance with data protection regulations. Printouts are no longer necessary.
Note for families: For babies and toddlers, the city still recommends going to a certified photo studio, as younger children often cannot assume the necessary head position for the photo booth.
A single image captured can be used for multiple documents (e.g., identity card and passport) on the same day. The images are stored for three to six days and manually deleted at the end of the week.
Other options for creating digital passport photos:
- At the town hall about the new vending machine
- In certified photo studios or drugstores with QR code (Data Matrix)
