On the International Day for Disaster Reduction, the Regional Council informs about its tasks and structures
the Darmstadt Regional Council (RP) , the authority is actively involved in disaster management in Hesse. On the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Reduction on October 13, the RP highlights its diverse responsibilities and structures in this area. This includes preventive measures – such as flood protection on the Main and Rhine rivers – as well as the coordination of relief efforts in the event of a crisis.
Staff always ready for emergencies
The Darmstadt Regional Council maintains a staff that operational around the clock and has been deployed, for example, in the construction of refugee shelters. The disaster management staff consists of specially trained employees of the authority who work closely with external specialists. These procedures are regularly rehearsed to ensure smooth operation in an emergency.
In the event of larger or cross-district crises—such as forest fires, industrial accidents, or floods —the staff can be called upon to coordinate relief efforts. Appropriate operational plans are maintained for various scenarios.
Support, training and logistics
The RP also manages state and federal disaster relief equipment , such as vehicles and equipment stationed at district level. The agency also participates training of volunteer emergency personnel
Most recently, the RP supported the deployment of Hessian forest fire units to France, where they were involved in fighting fires for two weeks in the summer.
District President Prof. Dr. Jan Hilligardt emphasizes:
"We take our responsibilities in disaster management very seriously. Only if we are well prepared at all levels can we act quickly and efficiently in the event of a crisis. At the same time, it is important that each and every individual stays informed and prepared – this is more important today than ever."
