Painting and magazine covers from Wiesław Smętek
The exhibition with the works of Wiesław Smętek , which in cooperation with the Pokusa e. V. was created in the German Poland Institute, Darmstadt Residenzschloss.
Wiesław Smętek's covers for German magazines such as the time, Stern, Spiegel, Geo, Cicero or Handelsblatt are probably known to everyone in the Federal Republic without knowing their name. His pointed, often sharp graphic comments on society, culture, knowledge and politics, but also on current events in the world, have not only impressed countless readers over the past 30 years week after week, they have burned themselves into the memory of the press landscape through their unique striking and to the point.
Wiesław Smętek reveals or exposes uncomfortable truths and the current current state, regardless of the topics he takes a closer look. He converts this brilliant ability with an enormous speed that inspires the viewers again and again. His covers are universal and often timeless.
Wiesław Smętek has also been working with German-Polish magazines for years, including with the magazine Dialog. Not only there he likes to deal with the German-Polish neighborhood and the common history. He works very skillfully with mutual prejudices and fears that are common in both countries. He even quotes works of Polish painters, edits them and creates a new, meaningful picture that is placed in a completely different, current context.
What a wonderful opportunity for a German-Polish dialogue without compromise at two exhibition locations: the German Poland Institute in Darmstadt and the Pokusa gallery in Wiesbaden. You can expect an exciting German-Polish encounter in two neighboring cities, an artistic experience full of surprising insights.
