City launches infrastructure project to secure water supply
An important infrastructure project can now begin in Reinheim: The building permit for the new drinking water softening plant has been granted. With this project, the city aims to improve the quality of its drinking water and strengthen its supply security in the long term.
Mayor Manuel Feick speaks of an important step for municipal public services. "Clean and reliable drinking water is not something to be taken for granted, but rather one of our most important responsibilities. The fact that we can now realize this major project for the future sends a strong signal for Reinheim," explains Feick.
Modern technology for water treatment
The new plant will operate using reverse osmosis. This is considered a modern standard in water treatment and enables an effective reduction of water hardness while maintaining high water quality.
In addition to the water softening system, other technical components are also being modernized. These include, among other things, well pumps, pipelines, and the system's control and electrical systems.
Greater security of supply during power outages
A key focus of the project is ensuring the drinking water supply in crisis situations. The new facility will therefore be equipped with a high-performance backup power system. This will allow the water supply to be maintained for large parts of the population even during a widespread power outage.
Construction work will start in 2026
The first construction work is scheduled to begin in spring or early summer 2026. The construction period is expected to last approximately one year.
During this period, the existing water softening plant will be temporarily taken out of service. As a result, the hardness of the drinking water will temporarily increase from approximately 16 to 18 degrees of German hardness to approximately 24 to 26 degrees. However, the city assures that the hygienic quality of the drinking water will remain guaranteed at all times.
Commissioning planned for 2027
Upon its planned completion in 2027, Reinheim will have a modern and efficient drinking water softening plant. Permanently softer water should not only increase everyday comfort but also protect household appliances, pipes, and installations.
“We have advocated for this solution with great conviction for many years. Now it is becoming a reality,” said Mayor Feick.
