The Dieburg district association accompanies a seriously ill passenger on an unforgettable trip to Serengeti Park
Dieburg/Hodenhagen. Making a heartfelt wish come true – that is the mission of the " Heart's Desire Mobile" of the German Red Cross (DRK) Dieburg District Association. For the seriously ill Sven and his wife Birgit, a special dream was fulfilled: to experience a few carefree days together once again in the Serengeti Park Hodenhagen – surrounded by wild animals, nature and African flair.
A final wish made with much heart
At the beginning of October, the team at the German Red Cross (DRK) district association in Dieburg received the moving message from Birgit, who described her husband's greatest wish. Kerstin Gaisbauer , coordinator of the "Heart's Desire Mobile," recalls:
"It was immediately clear to us: We had to fulfill this wish as quickly as possible. Because at the beginning of November, the park closes its gates – and this dream couldn't wait."
on October 26, 2025 – accompanied by volunteer helpers Clemens Müllemann (German Red Cross local chapter Langstadt) and his wife Beate . After a long drive, the team arrived at Serengeti Park in the afternoon, where a comfortable African-style lodge awaited the couple.
Unforgettable moments between giraffes and lions
On the very first day of their arrival, they embarked on their first safari tour through the park. Bactrian camels came right up to the windows of the vehicle – a moment that visibly moved Sven and Birgit. The next day, an exclusive Big Five tour with ranger Anja was on the agenda: giraffes were fed directly from the safari train, and lions and elephants were observed at close range. A jungle tour and a shared evening buffet rounded off the experience.
On the day of departure, there was one last tour in a double-decker bus – accompanied by ranger Wolfgang. The team began their journey home in the afternoon.
For the couple, the trip was an unforgettable experience:
"It was a very beautiful, interesting, and varied time at Serengeti Park! We are thrilled and absolutely raving about it. Everything went perfectly. Sven learned so much and recharged his batteries," Birgit said after their return.
Donations make final wishes possible
The German Red Cross (DRK) "Heart's Desire Mobile" accompanies terminally ill people on special journeys – often to places that hold deep personal significance for them. To ensure that these final wishes can continue to be fulfilled, the project relies on donations.
