Green area office deals with over 3,600 oaks - also operations in parks, at water and in the vivarium
In Darmstadt, this year's control of the oak processionary spinner began on April 22. The caterpillars of this butterfly species are a health danger for humans and animals, since their burning hair can trigger allergic reactions, skin irritation or asthmatic symptoms.
The municipal green area office treats around 3,600 oaks with a biological pesticide in the entire urban area (Bacillus Thuringiensis Sub. Kurstaki). The preventive measures take place, among other things, on playgrounds, cemeteries, in green areas as well as at schools, kindergartens and outdoor pools. A high -performance spray cannon is used.
Also on several waters-including Große Woog, Steinbrücker Teich, Grube Prinz-von-Hessen, Erich-Kästner-See and Arheilger Mühlchen-as well as in the Vivarium, the caterpillars are carried out. This is where the office uses special nematodes (Steinernema Feltiae), which are applied in the night hours between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. in order to take their sensitivity to light and to keep the noise pollution low. A second treatment is planned for the end of April.
In addition, selected areas such as the forest cemetery, the leisure grounds Orplid and the area of the animal welfare association between mid -April and early May are treated by helicopter. These areas must be blocked for a short time during the measures.
