Long-time First City Councillor and “social conscience” of the city dies at the age of 79
Riedstadt. The city of Riedstadt bids farewell to Erika Zettel. The long-time local politician and SPD politician passed away on August 11 at the age of 79. For more than 36 years, she shaped the city's political life – initially in the municipal council, later as First Deputy Mayor and First City Councilor.
Zettel became involved in local politics shortly after the 1977 municipal reform. From 1989, she was a member of the municipal council and served as First City Councilor from 1997 to 2013. During this time, she served as acting head of the city administration from October 2010 to April 2011. She declined to run for mayor, despite being considered to have a strong chance of success.
Erika Zettel has received numerous awards for her services, including the Federal Cross of Merit, the Gold Plaque of Honor of the City of Riedstadt, and letters of honor from the city and state. In 2014, she was appointed Honorary City Councilor.
Mayor Marcus Kretschmann praised her as "pragmatic and solution-oriented" and emphasized her high level of respect across party lines. She was particularly committed to social affairs, which earned her the reputation of "Riedstadt's social conscience."
In addition to her political activities, Zettel was active in twinning efforts and maintained close contacts with the twin towns of Brienne-le-Château (France), Sortino (Italy), and Tauragé (Lithuania). She also headed the Goddelau local court for many years and was involved in the Goddelau History Working Group.
Erika Zettel leaves behind a daughter and two grandchildren. "She deserves every award we have to offer," said Kretschmann. The city of Riedstadt will honor her memory.
