Nature and recreation in the Pfungstadt Moor – recommended by the working group for a senior-friendly district of Bergstraße
The working group "Senior-Friendly Bergstraße District" presents a recommended excursion destination for older people and their relatives each month. For June, they have Erlensee near Bickenbach – a natural recreation area with protected birdlife and accessible infrastructure.
Lake Erlensee originated in the 1960s as a gravel pit during the construction of the motorway and was later renaturalized. Today it is part of the Pfungstädter Moor nature reserve and a popular destination for walkers. The island in the middle of the lake serves as a breeding ground for many bird species, and the neighboring moorland lake, about 500 meters away, is also worth exploring.
Walking path, benches and kiosk with beer garden
A 2.5-kilometer circular trail leads through the idyllic surroundings of Lake Erlensee and is also suitable for people with limited mobility. Numerous benches along the way, as well as a kiosk with a beer garden – run by the Bickenbach 66 e.V. angling club – invite visitors to linger.
The lake is easily accessible by car or bicycle. A paid parking lot is located directly by the lake.
An overview of all excursion destinations reviewed so far can be found on the website of the Bergstraße District Senior Citizens' Advisory Board :
