From August 14th to 18th: Family-friendly festival with live music, film tent and shuttle service
The traditional open air film festival Weiterstadt transformed the Braunshardter Tännchen back into a summer cinema in the open air in 2025. From August 14th to 18th, around 200 short films from all over the world will be shown at the 49th festival - selected from more than 3,000 submissions. There is a varied family program with live music, children's films, food stands and a free shuttle bus from and to Darmstadt.
Already in 1986, an early short film by Javier Feser was ran at the festival, which later became famous for "Camino" with public successes such as "Clever & Smart" and six Goyas. This year he is represented again with a short film - with "Predator", his current short format work.
Diverse film program for young and old
The evening program starts with live music on four days before the break in the darkness of a wide variety of genres flicker to the canvas - from animation to documentation to comedy, thriller or experimental film.
The film program in the nearby film tent begins from 1 p.m., which also has a special children's program on Saturdays. Friday offers a youth program and the return of the popular short film poetry slam, in which texts written to short films are presented live.
Super 8 will be 60 - special program in the municipal cinema
A highlight 2025: The Super 8 format celebrates its 60th anniversary. For this purpose, the municipal cinema of Weiterstadt shows a historical program by the Offenbach filmmaker Enrico Corsano with rare footage, workshops for the Super 8 shoot and an exhibition on the festival site. In addition, eight current Super 8 short films compete for the favor of the audience.
Festival final and shuttle service
On Monday, August 18, the paid "Best of" program in the film tent forms the end of the festival (start: 8 p.m.). Admission remains free on the other days - donations are welcome.
