Eintracht wins the derby in Mainz, Wehen Wiesbaden changes coach and Offenbach loses top spot
A derby win for Eintracht, a Mainz player making the debut of an ex-Mainz player, a new coach for SVWW and a subdued rise for OFC – that's how things currently look for the four other major football clubs in the Rhine-Main area.
Frankfurt
Eintracht Frankfurt strikers Jonathan Burkardt and Younes Ebnoutalib played together for the German national team. Ebnoutalib started in his second international match against Greece, while Burkardt came on as a substitute. However, neither could prevent the 1-0 defeat. A total of 14 Eintracht players were away on international duty during the three-week international break.
After four matchdays, Eintracht Frankfurt sits in tenth place in the league with five points. At least they managed a 3-1 away win in the derby against Mainz, which made up for the embarrassing 1-4 home defeat against Augsburg the previous week.
Mahmoud Dahoud has a new job: The former international's contract with Eintracht Frankfurt was terminated at the end of June. At the end of September, the midfielder found a new challenge in the Emirates, joining newly promoted Dubai United.
Mainz
Mainz sent at least seven players to various national teams. In Jürgen Klopp's debut as Germany's national coach (incidentally, also a former Mainz player), Nadiem Amiri started in midfield. He owed his place in the starting eleven to a last-minute substitution: Jamal Musiala had injured himself during the warm-up.
In the league, Mainz are in sixth place after four matchdays – despite losing the derby against Eintracht Frankfurt (1-3). Coach Urs Fischer's team went into the international break with a thrilling 4-3 win in Mönchengladbach.
Mainz 05 have agreed to a comprehensive cooperation with third-division club SV Wehen Wiesbaden. This includes collaboration in the professional football sector, youth development, and, in the future, women's football – supplemented by exchanges at the organizational and staff levels
Wehen Wiesbaden
As a consequence of the unsuccessful start to the season, SVWW parted ways with coach Daniel Scherning and appointed Jochen Seitz as the new head coach. The former Bundesliga player was most recently the coach of 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig.
After seven matchdays, SVWW sits second-to-last in the league table and is also the weakest team offensively. The new coach will have to do without midfielder David Suarez for the next few months. The 25-year-old Spaniard suffered a serious ankle injury. Captain Tarik Gözüsirin will also miss three matches after receiving a red card in the 1-4 home defeat against Duisburg.
Offenbach
Offenbach Kickers' impressive run came to a halt at the end of the month. Coach Mark Zimmermann's team suffered a surprising defeat against newly promoted VfR Aalen. It was their first loss at the Bieberer Berg stadium this season, and as a result, they relinquished their top spot in the Regionalliga Südwest.
With 19 points from nine games, the team was tied for second place with league leaders SKV Freiberg at the end of September. Freiberg will then travel to Offenbach for the top-of-the-table clash on October 23rd.
