Mobility department Wandrey relies on visible rules and education for respectful cooperation
Darmstadt. The science city of Darmstadt wants to improve the coexistence of pedestrians and pedestrians and cyclists in the city center. The mobility and civil engineering office therefore plans to renew and supplement the signage in the pedestrian zone. The new signs are to be set up by the end of the year.
"The city center is a place of encounter, for shopping, lingering and living. In order for it to work well, all road users have to take one another into account," explains Mobility Director Paul Georg Wandrey . The aim is to strengthen mutual understanding with clear indications and to ensure more mobility peace.
The background is that there are regular conflicts in the field of the pedestrian zone - especially through cyclists who are on the move too quickly or outside of the times. While cycling in certain sections is permitted, but these rules are not always observed.
The city police will therefore strengthen its presence in the city center. In addition to punishing violations, the focus will be on education and direct communication with road users in the future.
"Only if rules are visible and understandable - and are also observed and controlled - can living together in public space work well," then concludes Wandrey.
