The Geo-Nature Park and the Groß-Gerau district offer exciting insights into the Rhine floodplain landscape
Under the title "Water Comes, Water Goes," the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geo-Nature Park and the Groß-Gerau district jointly organized a guided tour on the Kühkopf peninsula. The event took place last Saturday around the Schatzinsel Kühkopf environmental education center led by Christian Kehrenberg (HessenForst)
The experienced nature educator gave the 15 participants vivid insights into the dynamics of the Rhine floodplain landscape – and explained how animals and plants cope with the sometimes extreme fluctuations in water level.
Prehistoric crustaceans, natterjack toads and nurseries in the Old Rhine
The water level of the Rhine (Worms gauge) can by up to eight meters – with enormous effects on local living conditions. Particularly impressive: The prehistoric crustacean Triops can survive for years in dry soil until water returns – then its offspring hatch within a few hours. Mosquito larvae and the natterjack toad are also perfectly adapted to these changing conditions.
Currently, the Kühkopf peninsula is experiencing a period of low water , as was clearly visible from the Kühkopf Bridge. This leads to increased plant growth in the old Rhine channel , providing ideal breeding conditions for many fish species. However, if the oxygen level drops due to heat and excessive plant growth, the situation can become critical for many species. Rainfall, like that of the last few days, counteracts this and is important for maintaining the ecological balance.
