Geo-Naturpark and Groß-Gerau district give exciting insights into the Rheinauenlandschaft
Under the title "Water comes, water goes", the Geo-Naturpark Bergstrasse-Odenwald and the district of Groß-Gerau organized a joint tour on the Kühkopf. The event took place last Saturday around the Environmental Education Center Schatzinsel Kühkopf and was led by Christian Kehrenberg (Hessenforst) .
The experienced nature educator gave the 15 participants an insight into the dynamics of the Rheinauenlandschaft - and explained how animals and plants can cope with the sometimes extreme fluctuations in the water level.
Precumed crayfish, cross toads and children's rooms in the Altrhein
The water level on the Rhine (Worms level) can up to eight meters - with enormous effects on the living conditions on site. Particularly impressive: Triop's primeval cancer can survive in the dry ground for years until water comes back - then the offspring hatch within a few hours. Step -mosquito larvae and the ingredients also perfectly adapted to the changing conditions.
low water phase on the Kühkopf , as could be observed from the Kühkopfbrücke. This creates more plants in the Altrhein , which offer ideal conditions for reproduction for many fish species. But if the oxygen content drops due to heat and too strong plant growth, it can become critical for many species. Rainfalls like in the past few days counteract this and are important for the ecological balance.
