Three projects are intended to promote exercise and quality of life
The district town of Groß-Gerau is participating in the Hessian competition "Future City Center." The town council unanimously approved the participation. With three projects, the town aims to make its city center more attractive for different generations. These include an exercise course for children, additional seating areas with greenery, and outdoor exercise equipment for senior citizens.
Municipalities selected through the competition can receive a grant of up to €300,000. Between 80 and 90 percent of eligible expenses will be covered. Each municipality can submit a maximum of three projects.
Exercise course for children planned
A children's activity course with age-appropriate stations is planned for the city center. The plans include opportunities for balancing, climbing, and jumping. This is intended to create a new meeting place and make the city center more attractive, especially for children and families. The city of Groß-Gerau is applying for approximately €85,000 in funding for the project.
A second project envisions additional seating at key locations in the city center. In cooperation with the KlimaAktiv Groß-Gerau initiative, raised beds with shade-providing plants and trees will be installed to create more greenery and offer protection from the heat. The desire for additional seating was also expressed at the children's and youth forum at the end of June. The requested funding amounts to approximately €62,000.
Sports equipment for senior citizens
The third project is aimed specifically at older people. Around €40,000 will be spent on installing accessible outdoor exercise equipment. This equipment will enable moderate strength and endurance training, as well as exercises for coordination and mobility.
Economic development officer Thorsten Eisenhofer sees advantages for retail and restaurants in a higher quality of life. The goal is to create more offerings so that people enjoy visiting Groß-Gerau's city center and different stakeholders can collaborate.
Whether Groß-Gerau will receive funding from the state program "Future City Center" for the three projects is expected to be decided at the end of 2026.
