Remembrance of the Élysée Treaty and lived town twinning with Cestas
the Élysée Treaty will be commemorated in Reinheim on January 22nd . The treaty is considered a milestone in Franco-German reconciliation after the Second World War and the foundation for the close cooperation between the two countries that continues to this day.
The Franco-German Youth Office founded at the same time as the treaty was signed. The treaty stipulated that Germany and France would no longer make any major decisions on key political issues without consulting each other.
From the Élysée Treaty to the Franco-German Day
Forty years later, in 2003, Gerhard Schröder and Jacques Chirac launched the Franco-German Day . Sixteen years after that, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed the close cooperation between the two countries with the Treaty of Aachen , agreeing, among other things, to establish the Franco-German Citizens' Fund.
The Franco-German partnership is not only practiced at the state level, but also in the everyday life of municipalities – for example through town twinning and regular meetings.
Exchange and video message from the partner city
The Franco-German Day is celebrated annually both in Reinheim's twin town of Cestas with the traditional "German breakfast" and in Reinheim itself. This year, the focus is on the exchange of personal memories and experiences from many years of the town twinning.
Furthermore, another video message from Cestas will be shown. This one was recorded by interim mayor Jerome Steffe Pierre Ducout last June , who had led the twin town for 53 years. The next mayoral election in Cestas will take place in March, and Jerome Steffe will also be a candidate.
