Health hazard from giant hogweed – city focuses on targeted control along paths and frequently used areas
Giant hogweed, also known as Heracleum mantegazzianum, is currently generating numerous reports in Riedstadt. The city's service portal is receiving an increasing number of reports of new locations. The environmental department is aware of the infestations, and control measures are already in full swing.
The plant, which can grow up to four meters tall, originally comes from the Caucasus and was introduced to Europe in the 19th century. Since then, it has spread rapidly – initially along waterways, but now far beyond them. Its enormous seed production – a single plant can produce more than 50,000 seeds – facilitates its spread.
Health risks from furanocoumarins
Giant hogweed is particularly dangerous to human health: its sap contains furanocoumarins , which can cause severe skin irritation and burns when exposed to sunlight. Even contact with the plant can lead to blistering and inflammatory reactions – in severe cases, even third-degree burns possible. Protective clothing is absolutely essential during any contact. If skin contact occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention if necessary.

Control with limited resources
In Riedstadt, control efforts are focused on heavily frequented areas and paths. Here, machinery such as mulchers is used, coordinated by Gerry Assmann from the environmental department. He is supported by the municipal works department and local farmers. Effective control is hardly possible in hard-to-reach or more remote areas.
The plant is particularly resilient and constantly sprouts new growth – therefore, permanent control is very difficult. The most important measure remains preventing seed formation , which necessitates repeated treatments.
Known occurrences in Riedstadt include the old Neckar riverbed at Scheidgraben, Dohlgraben and Sandbach , the old Rhine in Erfelden and near the Wasserbiblos farm . The city is asking residents to be vigilant and is also informing them about the dangers.
