Cooperation between clinic, research and industry for medical innovation
With the signing of a Letter of Intent, several institutions from medicine, science, and industry have launched the establishment of the Health Care Innovation Cluster in Darmstadt. The initiative aims to strengthen the Rhine-Main region as a key location for applied health research, medical innovations, and artificial intelligence in healthcare.
The participating partners include the Darmstadt Clinic, the Technical University of Darmstadt, the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD, the AI initiative hessian.AI, HEAG Holding AG and the science and technology company Merck.
Innovation arising from medical practice
The new cluster aims to more closely link research, innovation, and clinical practice. New medical devices, digital health solutions, and AI-based applications will be developed directly in collaboration with the hospital and subsequently tested in everyday clinical practice.
According to the Darmstadt Clinic, this will create a so-called clinical real-world laboratory for the "hospital of the future". Concepts such as digitalization, automation, data-driven medicine and patient-centered care will be systematically integrated.
Expansion of clinical trials
A key focus of the cluster is the expansion of the clinical trial landscape. The aim is to integrate studies into development processes at an early stage and to enable new study formats. This should make Darmstadt a more attractive location for national and international research and industry partners.
At the same time, patients can gain faster access to innovative therapies.
Impulses for start-ups and new businesses
The cluster also sees itself as a platform for innovation and business start-ups in the healthcare sector. Start-ups and technology-oriented founding teams should gain access to clinical expertise, data infrastructures, and industrial partners.
The initiative aims to further strengthen Darmstadt as a location for health innovations and to create additional added value and qualified jobs in the region.
Perspective for a regional innovation network
The cooperation, which began in Darmstadt, is intended to be expanded to include other universities and partners in the Rhine-Main region in the future. The aim is to create a regional innovation ecosystem that connects research, teaching, and clinical application.
The Darmstadt Clinic is coordinating the development of the cluster and its organizational integration is also being handled there.
