Temperatures up to 37 degrees expected – city provides tips for heat protection
The city of Darmstadt, known for its scientific community, is warning of severe to very severe heat stress and high UV and ozone levels in the coming days. According to current forecasts from the German Weather Service, daily high temperatures between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius are expected from Friday, June 19, to Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Tropical nights with temperatures sometimes well above 20 degrees Celsius are also anticipated.
The high humidity makes the heat feel even more oppressive. The city therefore recommends that residents take appropriate precautions.
High UV exposure expected
In addition to the high temperatures, high to very high UV levels are expected due to intense sunlight. Forecasts indicate levels between 6 and 9.
On the city's information page for heat protection, interested parties can find current heat warnings, UV forecasts, and numerous tips on prevention and proper behavior in hot weather.
The website also provides information on the heat action plan of the science city of Darmstadt, information for particularly vulnerable groups, maps of cool places, live heat maps and other contact points.
Elevated ozone levels worsen air quality
Due to the summer high-pressure weather system, the city also expects elevated ozone levels. Ground-level ozone is formed by chemical reactions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds under strong sunlight.
Particularly high levels of pollution often occur in areas with heavy traffic. Current air quality measurements can be viewed on the city's data platform.
City calls for environmentally conscious behavior
Environmental and climate protection officer Michael Kolmer calls on the population to contribute to reducing ozone pollution through their own behavior.
“Everyone can contribute to reducing ozone pollution – and thus protect themselves and others,” explains Kolmer. He recommends switching to bicycles or public transport whenever possible, and postponing refueling or the use of petrol-powered garden equipment until the cooler morning or evening hours.
Tips for hot days
The city particularly recommends:
- Drink enough fluids
- Avoid direct sunlight
- Shift physical exertion to the morning or evening hours
- Use sunscreen and head coverings
- Pay special attention to children, the elderly, and people with health impairments
