Bicycle pictograms replace sidewalk signs – city responds to citizen requests and political impetus
Darmstadt – The city of Darmstadt has successfully implemented a measure to improve traffic safety on Heimstättenweg between "Am Pelz" and "Haardtring". The previous signage, which allowed cyclists to use the sidewalk, has been removed. Instead, bicycle pictograms painted on the road this week to clearly indicate that cyclists must now use the road.
“We had already included this adjustment in our internal planning. The SPD parliamentary group's motion in the Mobility Committee in June further prioritized the issue and accelerated its implementation,” explains Mobility Officer Paul Georg Wandrey . “This allowed us not only to increase the safety of pedestrians but also to make a further contribution to traffic calm in Darmstadt.”
Complaints about speeding on the sidewalk
Until now, the sidewalk in the affected section was open to cyclists with the additional sign "Cyclists permitted" —but only under the condition of walking speed and particular consideration. In recent months, however, complaints have increased: residents have reported more and more conflicts with fast-moving cargo bikes and e-bikes on the sidewalk.
Wandrey emphasizes: "The feedback from the public and the political initiative made it clear that action was needed. We then implemented the plans quickly."
bicycle pictograms now applied to the roadway are intended to further remind motorists that cycling on the road is permitted and to be expected – thus ensuring more mutual consideration in road traffic.
