40 young people from Darmstadt and eight partner cities make music together
Young people from Darmstadt and eight partner cities will share the stage on Sunday, August 16, 2026: The International Youth Orchestra Darmstadt will present its concert program for this year at 3 p.m. in the Orangerie. Admission is free. Afterwards, the orchestra will embark on a concert tour to its Austrian partner city of Graz.
The International Youth Orchestra is a partnership project of the city of Darmstadt and has been bringing young musicians together since 1988. Young people between the ages of 14 and 19 have the opportunity to make music together and at the same time get to know peers from other countries and cultures.
This year, the orchestra consists of 40 young people. Approximately half come from Darmstadt, the other half from eight partner cities. Three young musicians each are traveling from Nahariya, Alkmaar, Logroño, Płock, and San Antonio. Freiberg and Troyes are each represented by two young people, and Brescia by one.
Ten days together in Darmstadt and Graz
The newly formed ensemble has developed its concert program in just a few rehearsals. The premiere takes place on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Darmstadt Orangerie. Admission to the concert is free.
The young people will spend a total of ten days together in Darmstadt and Graz. During their stay in Darmstadt, the guests will be staying with the families of the Darmstadt participants. In addition to rehearsals and performances, the program includes joint leisure activities that offer opportunities for personal and cultural exchange.
After the concert in Darmstadt, the International Youth Orchestra will travel on to Graz. Another performance is planned in the Sacred Heart Church in the Austrian partner city. There, too, an accompanying program will give the young people the opportunity to get to know the city and its culture.
The project thus combines the promotion of young musical talent with Darmstadt's international city partnerships and enables young people to have personal encounters across national borders.
