Sustainability, diversity and commitment are at the heart of two successful institutions
Two municipal daycare centers celebrated a special anniversary on Friday, June 27th: The Thomasstraße daycare center in Eberstadt looks back on ten years of existence, while the Am See daycare center in Kranichstein is even celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Both facilities are run by the City of Darmstadt and focus on diversity, education, and close cooperation with parents and the local community. "These daycare centers are places of diversity, sustainability, and community," said Mayor Barbara Akdeniz at the celebrations. "Together, we have succeeded in further developing the daycare centers and always keeping the needs of children and families at the forefront."
Thomasstraße Daycare Center: Connection to Nature and Fairness
The Thomasstraße daycare center, under the direction of Saskia Fienold and her deputy Sabrina Schneider, currently cares for 85 children aged 1 to 6. The team of 26 early childhood educators has already received the "Fair Trade Daycare" award twice . A special focus is placed on nature-based education – with regular forest days, garden projects, and resource-conserving activities. The close cooperation with parents, the support association, and the local community was also highlighted during the anniversary celebrations.
Kita Am See: Intercultural work and new play spaces
The Am See daycare center is managed by Ms. El Halimi and, together with her deputy Ms. Binder, cares for 116 children with a staff of 16. In addition to targeted language development and intercultural activities, the daily routine includes soccer, dance, and a cooking club. The spacious outdoor area was completely redesigned in 2023 and offers children a wide range of play and exercise opportunities. A pavilion, built in 2011, is also available for socializing and activities.
The science city of Darmstadt also acknowledged the commitment of former daycare center directors such as Ms. Seelig, Ms. Jost and Ms. Pleek.
