Work on an important pedestrian and cycle path connection is scheduled to begin in 2027
The pedestrian and cycle underpass beneath Kranichsteiner Straße will be renovated. The Darmstadt city council has approved the refurbishment of the structure, which was built in 1968. Work is scheduled to begin in 2027 and will ensure the underpass's long-term preservation.
The connection between Meißnerweg and Pfannmüllerweg allows pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross Kranichsteiner Straße. It is also barrier-free and therefore usable for people with mobility impairments.
According to the city, the structure, which is now almost 60 years old, shows signs of age-related and weather-related damage. This damage is to be comprehensively repaired as part of the renovation.
Concrete, ramps and drainage will be renewed
The planned work includes repairs to damaged concrete sections of walls, ceilings, ramps, and stairs. Defective reinforcement and cracks will be repaired, and corrosion protection and joint sealing will be renewed. The concrete surfaces will receive a new surface protection system.
Another focus is on the ramps. The existing road surface will be removed and replaced with a durable mastic asphalt surface. At the same time, the waterproofing and drainage in the portal areas will be renewed. This should better protect the structure from penetrating moisture in the future.
The existing fall protection systems will also be renewed and adapted to current technical requirements. Work on the cornice beams and portal areas is intended to ensure long-term structural stability and limit further deformation of the wing walls.
Wandrey: Important connection maintained
“With this renovation, the science city of Darmstadt is investing in the long-term preservation of its transport infrastructure,” explains Head of Transport Paul Georg Wandrey. This will ensure that the connection, which is important for pedestrians and cyclists, can continue to be used “safely and reliably” in the future.
