Historic bath impresses with well-maintained ambience and high acceptance
The Groß-Gerau municipal outdoor swimming pool has had a successful start to the 2025 summer season. After a rather cool May, the second half of June, with its midsummer weather, brought a significant increase in visitors. By July 1st, 19,580 guests counted – more than twice as many as in the same period last year (7,900). The busiest day so far was June 22nd with 2,062 visitors.
Listed diving tower and well-maintained sunbathing lawns
Since its opening in 1937, the outdoor swimming pool has been not only a place of recreation but also an integral part of the city's history. The restoration of the striking ten-meter diving tower, preservation guidelines, was completed in 2023. This year, the swimming pool underwent a visual upgrade using approximately 450 kilograms of special paint. The sunbathing lawn was also enhanced through targeted tree maintenance – the mature trees provide natural shade and a special ambiance.
"The outdoor swimming pool is not just a meeting place – it's a piece of the city's history," explains Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau . The combination of historical architecture, modern maintenance, and a family-friendly atmosphere makes the pool a popular meeting place.
Affordable and popular: 650 season tickets sold
The facilities remain family-friendly: around 650 season tickets have been sold so far – a stable level compared to last year. Many regular visitors use the pool regardless of the weather, while others enjoy the full range of services when the sun is shining.
Skilled worker shortage in the swimming pool sector
The staffing situation is less encouraging. Of seven planned positions for qualified staff, four are currently vacant. There is also a need for lifeguards. The existing team is currently being supported by external staff to maintain pool operations.
Security service on duty on weekends
Due to increased incidents in swimming pools in other cities, Groß-Gerau is also focusing on security: On weekends, an external security service supports the outdoor pool team – especially on the sunbathing lawn.
, project manager Kai Steuernagel remains optimistic:
“Swimming is a basic necessity. Especially in times of increasing heat waves, we need places like this – for health, recreation and community.”
