Head coach Florian Kohfeldt justified the decision with Schuhen's leadership qualities and his high likelihood of playing time:
"Schuh is a player who has already filled an absolute leadership role in the team in recent years. He represents the team's interests clearly and directly – even on unpleasant topics. Through his long tenure at the club, he embodies SV 98 and its values."

Besides Schuhen Fraser Hornby (vice-captain), Fabian Holland , Kai Klefisch , Fabian Nürnberger and Aleksandar Vukotic part of the new team council.
great respect for Holland
, explicitly emphasizing the importance of the outgoing captain:
"He carried out the duties with great calm and clarity. The conversation with him was outstanding. He showed great understanding for the decision and remains an important voice in our team hierarchy."
Marcel Schuhen expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him:
“It is a great honor to be captain of the Lilies. My approach will not change as a result – I have always tried to lead by example. A respectful transition with Fabi was particularly important to me. I hope to be back on the pitch with him soon.”
Fabian Holland himself understands the change:
“It was something special to wear the armband. After my health setbacks, it's understandable that a player with more planning security now takes over the role. I will support Schuh in the best way possible – just as he did for me.”
