Mayor Benz and Head of Transport Wandrey are committed to integrated solutions for all road users
Mayor Hanno Benz and Transport Minister Paul Georg Wandrey are advocating for constructive cooperation in the current transport debate. "We want to give fair consideration to all road users – from pedestrians and bike paths to public transport and private motorized vehicles," Benz said. "That's what we mean by mobility peace : long-term, balanced solutions for everyone."
Both reject criticism that there has been too little progress in expanding cycling infrastructure. Numerous projects have been approved and are in various stages of implementation – including plans for Hügelstrasse, Dieburger Strasse, and the SQUADA ("Dutch Intersection") project. Delays are partly related to the budget situation or coordination with parallel construction projects.
"The 4×4 action plan is being consistently implemented," emphasizes Wandrey. "However, we need to plan soundly and finance sustainably – even if that means postponing projects like the cycle path on Alexanderstraße or the connection to Roßdorf."
For Benz and Wandrey, transport policy includes investing equally in cycle paths, public transport, and car traffic. "Just because developments don't fully align with the ideas of individual interest groups doesn't mean 'nothing is happening.' Promoting cycling is an important component of integrated transport planning," they both say.
Short-term priorities include the renovation of Pankratiusstraße, the upgrading of Jägertorstraße, and the completion of cycle paths in the Ludwigshöhviertel district. In parallel, the new transport development plan "Future Plan for Mobility Peace," . It incorporates all modes of transport and is intended to make Darmstadt future-proof in the long term.
