The renovation of the listed Mühltalbad swimming pool is in its final phase. Since construction began in October 2023, significant measures have been implemented to improve accessibility, family-friendliness, and sustainability . The full reopening is now planned for the 2026 summer season . However, some areas should be accessible as early as 2025 .
Key milestones include the completion of the lifeguard station , the new filtration system in the technical building , the rainwater cistern , the children's pool new water slide complex also been installed, and the large stainless steel pool with panoramic windows has been fitted.
Use of individual areas as early as 2025
The reopening, originally planned for August 2025, has to be postponed – partly due to unforeseen construction delays. Nevertheless, individual facilities will be used next year for technical testing and trial runs . Full commissioning will follow in May 2026 , as is usual for the outdoor swimming season.
The outdoor facilities , including beach volleyball and beach handball courts, will be completed in spring 2026. These will also be usable outside the bathing season.
"Care before speed"
"The Eberstadt Mühltalbad has always been the jewel among Darmstadt's outdoor swimming pools – and should remain so in the future," explains Mayor Hanno Benz . Despite a tight budget, the city consciously opted for a high-quality implementation.
The decision to postpone the full opening was made for reasons of due diligence and safety . On a positive note, the project remains within the originally approved budget , which is considered a great success given rising construction costs.
