Men's groups from Caritas discover the local mushroom world
A joint mushroom hike took the men's groups from the Caritas centers in Eberstadt South, Pallaswiesen, and Morneweg districts to the Darmstadt West Forest on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Under expert guidance, the participants explored the local mushroom population and learned interesting facts about the different species. Several children also accompanied their fathers on the outing.
The event combined experiencing nature with the aim of fostering encounters and exchange among the participants. The men's groups are organized by the two Caritas centers in cooperation with Werkhof e.V.
Discovering and identifying mushrooms
The hike was accompanied by Mr. Sattler from the "Fungiversum", who introduced the participants to the world of mushrooms.
During their walk through the western forest, the group discovered numerous mushrooms, which they then examined and identified together. The expert shared interesting facts about the native species and their characteristics.
There was also plenty for the children accompanying their fathers to discover. They could experience nature up close and gain their own experience searching for mushrooms.
Men's groups promote encounters and exchange
The joint hike is an initiative of the Caritas centers in Eberstadt South and the Pallaswiesen and Morneweg districts. The men's groups aim to provide opportunities to make new contacts, exchange experiences, and address personal and social issues.
This includes, among other things, one's own role as a man, traditional role models and societal expectations.
Shared activities such as mushroom hikes provide a framework for getting to know each other and strengthening the sense of community.
Cooperation with the depot
The men's groups are organized in cooperation with Werkhof e. V. and financially supported by the Wilhelm-Emmanuel-von-Ketteler Foundation.
With these programs, the participating institutions aim to promote social contacts and offer opportunities for men from different life situations to meet.
The mushroom hike in Darmstadt's Westwald showed how shared learning, nature experiences and personal conversations can be combined.
