New animal arrivals from Berlin-Friedrichsfelde – enclosure shared with wild turkeys
The Vivarium Zoo in Darmstadt, the city of science, has welcomed a new animal: a North American porcupine recently moved into its new home. The animal comes from the Berlin-Friedrichsfelde Zoo and now shares an enclosure with wild turkeys. Both species originate in North America, thus complementing each other geographically.
The newcomer belongs to the porcupine family, also known as ursons. Outwardly, they resemble porcupines, but their behavior differs significantly: porcupines are excellent climbers and move cautiously through the treetops – similar to binturongs. They are primarily active at dusk or at night.
These animals are part of the large family of American rodents and are related to guinea pigs. In the wild, North American porcupines live in the western and northern regions of the USA, in Canada, and in Alaska.
With the new inhabitant, the Vivarium Zoo expands its range of North American animal species and offers visitors exciting insights into the fauna of the American continent.
