New location for Darmstadt's miniature history: better protected, more centrally presented
Darmstadt unveiled on Friday (July 11) in the foyer of the Justus Liebig House Mayor Hanno Benz , who also serves as the cultural affairs officer for the city of Darmstadt, praised the new location: "The old town model illustrates how our city has changed over the last 100 years. With its new location, the model will receive greater attention and benefit from improved environmental conditions, ensuring its preservation for many years to come."
The model depicts the old town around 1930 at a scale of 1:160 created between 1987 and 1997 by the artist Christian Werner Häussler Dr. Ekkehard Wiest (d. 2020), a prominent local historian and author, donated it to the city in 2010. Since then, it has been part of the city's art collection. Previously, the model was housed in the Hinkelsturm tower, where it was exposed to the elements over the years, resulting in minor damage.
The proposal to relocate the model came from Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Martin , chairman of the Darmstadtia e.V. The move was supported by Mayor Benz and quickly implemented. In the foyer of the Justus Liebig House, the model not only gains greater visibility but is also better protected from the elements.
Display case on wheels – thanks to Darmstadtia e. V. and Rotary Club
The new, mobile display case, measuring 160 x 160 centimeters, was manufactured by the Darmstadt-based exhibition stand builder Uhland and offers a secure and flexible exhibition solution. It allows for easy relocation during events in the foyer. Darmstadtia e. V. covered the majority of the costs, supported by a donation from the Rotary Club Darmstadt .
The late benefactor Dr. Ekkehard Wiest significantly shaped the city's historical memory. For his dedication, he was awarded the Hessian Order of Merit and the Johann Heinrich Merck Prize of the city.
