Two volunteers record overtaking distances - the city and ADFC want to make cycling more secure
Since the beginning of June, two cyclists with so -called open bike sensors (OBS) have been traveling in Weiterstadt for the first time. The devices attached to the bike measure the side overtaking distance from motor vehicles and thus provide valuable data for improving traffic safety.
As part of a meeting on June 5, the devices were installed by a member of the ADFC Darmstadt-Dieburg. The volunteers received technical instruction as well as information on data protection and functionality. The project was coordinated together by the city of Weiterstadt and the ADFC. The aim is to capture the actual traffic situation from the perspective of cyclists - especially how often and how narrowly they are overtaken in everyday life.
The OpenBikesensor is an open, non-commercial project that is used nationwide. In addition to the side distance, time and location are recorded during the journey- of course in compliance with all data protection requirements. The anonymized data help to identify particularly critical sections of the route and create a well -founded basis for future improvements in the cycling infrastructure.
The city of Weiterstadt thanks the volunteers and the ADFC Darmstadt-Dieburg for the implementation. "Such projects make an important contribution to promoting cycling and increasing traffic safety," says the town hall.
