Campaign emphasizes importance of a healthy breakfast for energy and concentration
On Wednesday (August 27, 2025), City Treasurer André Schellenberg and School Director Holger Klötzner presented reusable lunch boxes containing organically grown food nearly 1,700 first-graders as part of the nationwide organic lunchbox campaign
The campaign was brought to Darmstadt in 2022 by Sabine Kleindiek (EAD) and Angelika Buchholz (School Office) and has been implemented annually since then. The goal is to educate children and families about the importance of a healthy diet.
"A few days after starting school, this is a little surprise for the first-graders and is intended to demonstrate the role a healthy breakfast plays in their everyday school life," explained Schellenberg. Klötzner added: "A breakfast like this one, consisting of apple, carrot, raisin roll, and tea, is the foundation for daily learning, provides energy, and promotes concentration."
Volunteers had packed the yellow containers the day before at the EAD. In addition to food from the Darmstadt area, they also contained a seasonal calendar, a coloring flyer, and age-appropriate nutrition tips. The campaign was organized by the EAD's catering and housekeeping staff, the KAGEL (food and beverage service), and the school district, which supplied some schools with cargo bikes.
The campaign was once again supported by numerous companies and institutions from Darmstadt and the surrounding area, including Bauhaus, bauverein AG, entega GmbH, Software AG, Obstbau Speth, Vollkornbäckerei Dieburg and Sonnentor Kräuterhandels GmbH.
