App-controlled vending machine closes supply gap in the Auf Esch district
A new DHL Group been officially unveiled at the indoor swimming pool in Groß-Gerau Jörg Rüddenklau tested the new facility together with Gabriele Schulz and Kai Steuernagel . A trial run with a package for the Kita Sportpark daycare center went smoothly.
Supply gap in the Auf Esch district closed
The new parcel locker closes a gap in postal services for the Auf Esch district. Mayor Rüddenklau had advocated for the installation of a parcel locker at this location. A partner branch of the post office has been operating in the Nahkauf Auf Esch III supermarket since summer 2025.
The new parcel station at the indoor swimming pool has 109 compartments and belongs to a new generation of machines that are fully app-controlled. A display is not required; operation is exclusively via smartphone.
Solar-powered and climate-friendly technology
The parcel locker is located on municipal property and is equipped with solar panels. This allows it to be completely self-sufficient in terms of electricity and requires no external energy source. This technology makes the machine more climate-friendly than previous models.
According to the DHL Group, the new parcel station is already being well used. The district administration office and the district hospital are located in the immediate vicinity, thus connecting many workplaces. The facility is accessible around the clock.
More parcel lockers in the city
There are currently five parcel lockers in Groß-Gerau. Further locations are at the Edeka Center on Mainzer Straße, at the Lidl supermarket on Odenwaldstraße, and at IMO Car Wash in Helvetia Parc on Union-Brauerei-Straße.
DHL customers can receive and send parcels 24/7 at Packstations. Receiving parcels requires free registration and the use of the DHL Parcel App. Sending parcels is possible without prior registration.
Post Office relies on partner branches
Since the closure of the post office on Gernsheimer Straße in February 2025, the postal service no longer operates its own branches in Groß-Gerau and its districts. Instead, there are five partner branches, including locations at the Edeka Center, in Helvetia Parc, in Nahkauf Auf Esch, in Dornheim, and in Wallerstädten.
According to the DHL Group, partner branches and DHL parcel shops offer significantly longer opening hours than former post offices. While these used to be open for an average of around 18 hours per week, they are now open for approximately 55 hours.
Searching for a solution for the northern settlement
Following the closure of a partner branch on Wasserweg, the postal service is currently seeking a solution for postal services in the northern part of the settlement. Possible options include opening a new partner branch or installing an automated post office where customers can purchase stamps and send letters and parcels.
