Children practice safe crossing at the busy Kammerhofweg
As the city of Riedstadt reports, the city police trained first and second graders from the Leeheim elementary school on how to safely cross Kammerhofweg. The training was prompted by the newly installed pedestrian traffic light, which became necessary due to increased traffic volume following the renovation of the main road through the town.
Twenty children from class 2a watched attentively as city police officers Gülsah Yildirim and Joachim Laux arrived at the school. Together with their teacher, Bianca Hirsch, and other chaperones, the children made their way to the traffic light. On the way, they discussed dangerous spots in the road and practiced the correct way to cross the street.
On Kammerhofweg, the children learned step by step how to use the new pedestrian-activated traffic light safely: press the button, wait for green, briefly check if vehicles are stopping, and then quickly cross the street. City police officer Laux also explained that children should continue crossing even if the light turns red while they are crossing.
The training took place a few days after the traffic light was put into operation. The system has been operational since August 29th, and practice sessions with the first and second grade classes began on September 3rd. "Many of our children live directly on or near Kammerhofweg and use this road daily," said class teacher Hirsch.
Finally, the second graders were allowed to try on high-visibility vests with the imprint "City Police" – a highlight that caused great enthusiasm.
